Although originally intended for clockwork organ, this piece is also well known in arrangements for duo pianos, string quartet, orchestra, and woodwind quintet. This arrangment is for SAATB or SSATB saxophone quintet.This amazing work was composed in the last year of Mozart's life to fulfil an unusual commission. A wealthy Viennese aristocrat, Joseph Deym von Strzitez, owned several mechanical organs (also called musical clocks). One of these was in a public exhibit dedicated to the memory of a military hero. Deym wanted new music every week for his exhibit. This Fantasia In F, K. 594 is the first of three works Mozart composed especially for it.Mozart's original title is Adagio and Allegro for Mechanical Organ. Although dissatisfied with the timbre of the instrument, Mozart was plesed to have Deym's money. The music itself exceeded all expectations. One newspaper reported: Every hour one hears a suitable music which the unforgettable composer Mozart wrote especially for it. It surpasses in precision and clarity everything which was ever attempted or designed for this kind of artistic product. Fantasia In F begins and concludes with an adagio in F minor with slow moving chords and a gently descending, weeping melody line. The middle section is in F major and features trumpet calls and flashy counterpoint. All players will be well occupied with this piece.This arrangement for saxophone quintet is in the original keys of F minor and F major. The Alto Sax 1 part has long sections of 16th note passage work and requires great flexibility on the palm keys. The Soprano Sax 2 (Alto 1 sub) makes those sections much easier. An ideal solution would be to have the alto 1 player switch to soprano sax for the middle section.T.

Published by Drake Mabry (A0.799352). 9.28.85 was written in 1985 and the date refers to the date of completion, September 28, 1985. Excerpts of this piece are included in Benny Sluchin’s book on contemporary trombone excerpts. This work includes my invention of the idea of playing lip multiphonics. Here's the story. During the Spring of 1985, I participated in the l'atelier de recherche instrumental department for acoustic instrument exploration at IRCAM working with Pierre-Yves Artaud (flute), Daniel Kientzy (saxophone) and Benny Sluchin (trombone). Most of the research was based on looking at new ways to produce sound with acoustic instruments and the department was open to performers and composers. A few months after the IRCAM workshops Benny Sluchin and I decided to work on a piece for him. We worked together to explore various contemporary techniques which I might select for the piece. After a while I narrowed down my choices to a movement with air, one with lip multiphonics, and one using the spatial characteristics of the bell, singing, and sending sound out the back by an alternate F tube. Benny is great to work with as he’s a wonderful musician, anything is possible, he’s open to trying out new ideas and he’s a great human being. The perfect combination for a composer. First, about the lip multiphonics in the second movement. During one of our work sessions we looked at singing and playing multiphonics but I wanted something different. So I asked Benny what would happen if he placed his embouchure between two partials of the overtone series. The result was amazing!! A number of partials sounded at the same time and the textural colors were varied and beautiful. The only problem with this was the window for placing the embouchure was very narrow. Slightly too high or slightly too low would result in a terribly out of tune and uncentered partial. Reminded me of what a sick cow might sound like. This difficulty was less pronounced between partials of a fifth but became more difficult when the partials were closer together. Fourths were okay but major and minor third partials were extremely difficult and risky. We decided what the heck and I wrote the second movement knowing the risks. But when the embouchure is well placed it produces such a beautiful sound. Benny mentioned that the idea had a pedagogical side benefit. He said from being able to focus on placing the embouchure in such a limited ‘window’ it made placing the embouchure for normal note much easier. My invention has been used by other composers since including Xenakis in 1986 and an Icelandic composer a couple of years later. The alternate movement come about after Benny had played the piece for a couple of years. He’s able to get these multiphonics but realized that maybe there would not be many other players able to do so. To avoid the problem that this movement might scare players away from the piece we decided that it would be good to have an alternate movement which would use the same ideas but in a less stressful way for the performer. I thought this was a good idea and wrote, what for me, is a more meditative piece based on the same material. I also imagined that it could be played by itself if the player wished. There is a misprint in the score at the end of the first line where there appears a multiphonic based on placing the embouchure between an Eb and an A natural. The A should be an Ab. The first movement explores the subtleties of various vowel and consonant formations in the mouth while playing. Since the trombone is such a perfect amplifier these small details can be heard. For instance the difference between ‘ts’ and ‘tsh’ comes off well. I think of this movement as a vocal conversation or discourse which becomes highly animated at the end. The dynamics play an important role in providing additional colors. The player should really ‘speak’ without speaking for this movement to work. The third movement is my circus piece. I know it is complicated to.

I originally wrote a Brass Band version of this work to be performed by the Freedom Brass Band of Northeast Ohio in the summer of 2011 knowing that I wanted it to be connected to a well-known patriotic text. It quickly became my most popular work and I decided to arrange it for Concert Band in 2018. Because it was adapted from a Brass Band setting, some of the instrument ranges are more advanced, but can still work for an advanced high school or college band.From a young age I found inspiration in Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. As a Boy Scout, I had read it at an annual service on Memorial Day. I had also studied it in school and even heard it spoken by a Lincoln impersonator. The words from this address speak to the ideals of human equality and freedom, and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect those ideals. Lincoln refers to this sacrifice as the last full measure of devotion and it is to those men and women who so bravely sacrificed that I dedicate this work. One Last Bar Then Joe Can Sing (1994) was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain for the percussion quintet Nexus, and is a reflection on aspects of percussion history, both personal and musical. The members of Nexus are my friends (I played in the Steve Reich Ensemble along with Russ Hartenberger in 1972, the year after Nexus was formed). The piece aimed to demonstrate how a fine percussion ensmeble can be as musically expressive and subtle as, say, a string quartet. The piece starts from the last bar at the end of the second act of my opera Medea, a very short coda for a quintet of untuned percussion instruments during which the curtain falls. In this piece, however, this one apparently innocuous measure is progressively fragmented until it is taken over, little by little, by the addition of tuned percussion instruments. Eventually two metallophones (crotales and songbells) play aria-like material with bows, occasionally joined by the xylophone, and accompanied by marimba and xylophone ostinati. The piece ends with a coda in which phrases are passed from bowed vibraphone to bowed crotales, then to bowed songbells, supported by tremolos on the marimbas. The rare 3-octave songbells that Nexus owns is one of the American instrument maker J. C. Deagan's particularly fine instruments. The piece is effectively a kind of homage to Deagan, the Stradivarius of the tuned percussion world, who collaborated closely with Percy Grainger in the development of tuned percussion music between the wars. The allusions in the title are obvious: the one last bar is the last measure of music from my opera; the song is that of Deagan's songbells. In the case of Joe I wanted to link my father, Joe Bryars (who was a good amateur baritone singer) with Joseph Deagan and his songbells. The concept of my new work, Orbit: A Symphonic Fantasy, is concerned with dreamers and visionaries who look towards the future. Orbit: A Symphonic Fantasy is an epic space themed symphonic poem. The overall feeling I attempted to capture with this piece is one of vigorous heroism, evocative lyricism, and spirited adventure. Inspired by the final flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program that ended on July 21, 2011, I wanted to create a tribute of sorts to the spirit of adventure, heroism, and exploration from those who have a dream to explore and the courage to meet the future without fear. The work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.Below is a short article about the Adagio by the arranger, Sean F. Biehn:There is much controversy as to who wrote the Adagio for Strings in G minor and whether it was a stolen idea or embellished from a piece of a manuscript. The piece is considered to be a fragment of Tomaso Albinoni's (1671-1751) original manuscript with a few measures of the melodic material and the basso continuo. During World War II, the bombings of Dresdon, which is where the Saxon State Library resided, was destroyed and Remo Giazotto (1910-1998) evacuated most of its documents, being that he was a musicologist-and an Albinoni biographer. Giazotto took the fragment of manuscript and completed what he thought would be the completed piece which in turn makes his completed piece an original composition. In 1958, Giazotto finalized the piece under the title of Adagio in G minor for Strings and Organ, on Two Thematic Ideas and on a Figured Bass by Tomaso Albinoni. Remo Giazotto never shared the manuscript and after his death in 1998, there has never been a record of the missing manuscript fragment. To this day, the string ensemble with organ is popularly performed. There have been numerous and recent alterations in instrumentation for this piece due to the fact that other soloists wanted to perform the beautiful piece. This particular version of the piece contains a string quartet accompanying a trombone soloist.

DIVINUM MYSTERIUM is a chant tune dating to the 12th century which is associated with the hymn, Of the Father's Love Begotten, based on the Latin hymn, Corde natus ex parentis, written by Prudentius in the late 4th / early 5th century. This is thus one of the very oldest texts and tunes still sung in our churches today. The shape and flow of this arrangement, which includes quotations from CANTIQUE de NOEL (O Holy Night) – Adolphe Adam (1844), was strongly influenced by what one writer described as the strong wave shapes of the tune. I’ve attempted to make these waves a significant feature of the piece, featured in both the constant crescendo/decrescendos and the interweaving of the two tunes. And, just as ocean waves don’t arrive in steady rhythms, these musical waves are variable – sometimes closely spaced, sometimes not, and sometimes overlapping. The unique character of each of the three major sections is implied in their headings: (1) with mystery and wonder, (2) Joyfully – a child is born, and (3) contemplative – God is with us. The opening section portrays the mystery of the trinity (the hymn text was written as an apology for the Nicene Creed) mixed with the wonder of the Creator God lying in a manger. Since the tune is derived from medieval chant, I wanted this section to reflect the loose metrical nature of that genre, so the melodic phrasing should predominate over any sense of meter up to letter C. The initial tonal and metrical ambiguity and the fractured melodic lines gradually meld into conventional tonality and clear statements of the two main themes. Don’t let the poco rit. just before C be too poco. Build a definite sense of tension in anticipation of the Presto section. The Presto section presents the first complete statement of the main theme. I felt a strong, rhythmic treatment should follow the ambiguity of the opening to reflect the joy of the Messiah’s incarnation realized. However, the gravity of the text demands avoidance of frivolity and banality. Thus, I used a combination of the long, flowing lines with a syncopated pulse and echoing rhythms to produce what I hope is a fresh but still reverent treatment of this ancient hymn – one that produces a kaleidoscope of tonal color. Arriving at the third section at letter F, the asymmetrical pulse gradually shifts into a straight 3 pattern. The slower tempo and return of the secondary theme call us to reflect on the import of God now with us. The marking of Let off the gas and coast to the end is a word picture of how the tempo should draw to a close, as would an expert helmsman allow the ship’s momentum to stop just as it taps the dock. One parting moment is provided to savor the woodwinds closing phrase from CANTIQUE de NOEL. Robert Myers S.D.G. This is a brilliant arrangement of the first movement Longing of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of four B-flat trumpets, four horns in F, three trombones, euphonium and tuba. William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in October 1931 at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the melancholy flavor of the Blues to the symphony. For William Grant Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution, separate from the spiritual and popular jazz, and he wanted to incorporate it into a symphonic work based on Western classical symphonic instrumentation and forms. Instrumentation: picc, flute, oboe, bassoon, clar. 1,2,3, bass clar, alto 1,2, tenor, bari, tpt 1,2,3, horn 1,2,3, trombone 1,2,3, baritone (both TC and BC parts), tuba, mallets, perc (snare, bass drum and crash cym)The MP3 recording was created with the FINALE sounds. Naturally, it does not reproduce MARCATO style unless I input input all quarters as dotted 8ths. Actually, I start the piece CANTABILE and switch to MARCATO at and the rocket's red glare. I never could get the percussion sounds I wanted so I entered the snare roll as individual notes. Thanks.

Published by Brian Streckfus (A0.1135655). This is a shortened version of the song to fit nicely on two pages (I needed a shorter version for the circumstances I'm under). The melody and lyrics are like the original as far as I can tell, but I did make changes to the harmony. Usually these changes to the harmony are to enhance the word painting, or to have it be more idiomatic to guitar. A version like this is ideal for someone who wants to play a very fancy version of the song on solo guitar, though adding vocals in should still be fairly easy. I personally sing a lot better if I can play the melody first on guitar because then I know exactly what I'm doing. Versions like these can really be as simple or as complex as you want, if you want something simple, just play the chord diagrams and sing!1. Guitar Arrangement Lead Sheet Style2. Guitar Tab 3. Chord Charts 4. Less stereotypical chords 5. Fingerings and letter names added to aid in sight-reading 6. Voice leading considerations 7. Making the music idiomatic for guitarTips:1. Notes with the stem direction going down are background harmonies that should be played quietly. This hidden meaning tends to only happen with polyphonic instruments such as piano and guitar. You'll eventually notice this anyways because there is no lyric underneath the note.1. Slurs are notated to the make the music easier and better sounding for guitar not vocals, though of course it often mimicks slurs similiar to a vocalist.2. Fmaj7(#11) is not in the original and is a key change since it includes an F and not an F#.3. Sometimes it can look like the melody does not contain a key change, but then when you anaylze the letter names of the chords, you will find that there is indeed key changes in the chords. The Beatles is a good example of a band that does this often.4. E minor and G major chords technically only need 2 or 3 notes. This is one simple but effective strategy to have less cliche chords.5. The F(#5)(#11) chord in the second to last measure could probably be just an F major chord.6. The E natural in measure 42 could be an Eb if the harmony is too avant-garde for you. Made sense to me because of word painting and I wanted a keyless and dreamy feeling for the end. 7. G/B chords are arguably nicer than a full G chord, though of course the decision is ultimately up to. It is better because the chord is imperfect, it causes the audience to not clap too soon. I also only strum the chord up to where the vocal melody is happening, that way the main melody is always in the spot light, and I find songs are easier to sing this way.
